Into the Forest

They once told us a different story
One that helped us go to sleep
But now they’re gone no where among us
The trees surrounding rustled nightmares into our dreams
Eager to know how the chapter unfolded
But the branches intertwined to cover and hide
Daylight started to get much darker
It was not yet even reaching the night

Spores dispersed seeds planted in places the wind blew
Rain under covered branches the planted grew only a few
Hunger for more the branches would part
Sunlight seeped just enough for a meagre feed
No one thought different of this forest amongst us
The leaves all rustled to the same rhythm and beat
Nothing stopping the branches growing
Not even a threat to engulf it in flames

There she walked
Quietly into the forest
An iris she sought
To find
